Slot machines are today the most popular games in the casinos, and draw to them millions of players each year. There are several reasons for this, and perhaps as many as the players themselves. However, it might be good to go back to the history of the slots to understand where they come from.
Slot machines were invented by Charles Fey, a car mechanic who wanted his customers to have something to do while their cars were being fixed. There were other slots at the time, but those offered prizes of candy, toys and other small games. Fey's machine was the first to offer its players real gambling, that is, it paid out coins according to the combinations on the reels. When Fey placed his machine in his shop, it was an immediate success, and the popularity of his shop was on the rise. In time, however, people began to come to his shop only to play his machine.
Seeing that the slot machine was popular, Fey began to make more and sell them to the large casinos. At first, they were somewhat skeptical. They did not see how the game could compete with the more established games of old. The place a limited number of slots near the other games, and intended them as a kind of filler, a way to minimize the lines at what they saw as the more popular games. However, great was their surprise when they saw that the slots proved far more popular than they had ever dreamed possible.
